File a sales tax return, even if the amount due is zero

Colorado sales tax account holders must submit a sales tax return for every filing period, even when they do not have any tax due.

The Department of Revenue’s tax accounting system requires a tax filing for every period. When there is no return for a period, the system regards a missing return as a non-filed return. Taxpayers will receive nonfiler notices. After several non-filer events, the department will close a sales tax license for failure to file a return — even if the amount that should have been filed is zero.

You can easily file sales tax returns through the department’s free and secure Web service, Revenue Online. Create your own User ID and Password to sign into your tax account, file returns, monitor tax filing and payment histories, make a payment and send the department a secure message, from within your tax account, with inquiries you may have regarding your taxes.
